The Cost-of-Living Crisis and Our Community
The past few weeks in my role at The Link Community Hub has proved more difficult and challenging than any time I’ve ever previously known. I’ve seen more and more people coming into us every day in absolute desperation, due to food and fuel poverty because of the present financial crisis.
Although we can help them on a short-term basis with what we’re doing this just isn’t enough. We know in October when there will be further price hikes, we will see more poverty and deprivation. We need to act on that now and start to plan so that come October when even more people are sat in their homes with no electricity, no gas and no food we will have a place where we can help them.
The Link does not have the space for what we need to provide. There is a building on the estate that is not being used, it would be a perfect location to provide the help and support which will be needed. Our local Councillor has assigned 2 Council Officers to help us look at obtaining the building.
We will use the building to provide a community kitchen which will offer healthy simple meals free of cost to people who need it.
We’ll also provide food parcels and specialised help and support. It may just be a place that some people need to use for a cuppa, to get warm and a friendly face waiting. One of the questions we’ve been asked is would there be volunteers to help this…
Would you be willing to help? Please contact me your details. Whether you’re an individual, a company, or an organisation.
Thank you – and we’ll keep you updated here.
