Throughout the year we are proud to welcome both adults and young people to The Link as part of a range of work-experience and supported learning programmes. These opportunities give people the chance to build confidence, develop new skills and feel part of a real working environment in the heart of their community.
We regularly support students from Handsworth Grange School, Birley Academy and Sheffield College, who spend time with us as part of their work experience Many of these amazing young people quickly become part of the team — and a number have even chosen to return during school holidays to continue volunteering with us, which we absolutely love to see.
This year we were also delighted to take part in the first trial of the Summer Works Programme with Sheffield Futures. This fantastic initiative helps young people gain real-life work experience and supports them on their journey into employment. We were so impressed with the programme — and the brilliant young people who joined us — that we are really pleased to be taking part again next summer.
Alongside this, we work closely with our friends at the Job Centre, offering an 8-week work-experience programme for people who are looking to move back into work. This has been incredibly successful, with many participants going on to secure employment after completing their time with us. For some, The Link has been the first step back into routine, confidence and connection — and we’re really proud to be part of that journey.
At The Link, work experience is about much more than just learning tasks. It’s about belonging, encouragement, teamwork and real opportunity — and seeing people grow during their time with us is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
“Seeing people grow in confidence during their time with us is honestly one of the best parts of this job. You watch someone come in feeling unsure, and a few weeks later they’re chatting, laughing and really believing in themselves.”
— Helen, Community Development Manager
“Our work-experience volunteers quickly become part of The Link family. It’s not just about learning skills — it’s about feeling valued, supported and encouraged.”
— Ellie, Community Worker
“For lots of our participants this is more than work experience — it’s a fresh start. We’re proud to walk alongside them on that journey.”
